Black History Facts.

Now you know I wasn’t going to go the whole February without doing ANYTHING related to Black History Month :) Here are some interesting facts I found at biography.com and other places on the net.

  1. Tice Davids, a runaway slave from Kentucky, was the inspiration for the first usage of the term “Underground Railroad.” Davids’ owner assumed the slave had drowned when he attempted his swim across the Ohio River. He told the local paper that if Davids had escaped, he must have traveled on “an underground railroad.” Davids, however, did live, giving the Underground Railroad its now-famous name.
  2. Buffalo Soldiers is the name given to the all-black regiments of the U.S. Army started in 1866. The name was respectfully given to the African–American cavalries during the 1800s by the Native American Kiowa tribe. More than 20 Buffalo Soldiers received the highest Medal of Honor for their service—the highest number of any U.S. military unit. The oldest living Buffalo Soldier, Mark Matthews, died at the age of 111 in 2005. These soldiers received second class treatment and were often given the worst military assignments, but had the lowest desertion rate compared to their white counterparts.
  3.  Cathay Williams was the one and only female Buffalo Soldier, posing as a man named William Cathay to enlist in the 38th infantry in 1866. She served for two years before a doctor discovered that she was a woman, leading to her discharge. Continue reading

Has Spring decided to come a little later?

By the time last weekend came around, I was looking forward to Spring. The sun came out and gave me false hope. Then the temperature dropped to the 20′s and here I am wearing a hat and scarf and gloves outside again. The really sad part about this situation is that it could be like this until July. I may have to run away from home this Summer to my parents’ house in the land of sun tea and crayfish (crawfish) boil.

Exhausted.

I just hate it when I put something somewhere and I come back to get it and can’t find it. Today’s item in question is my mp3, which I have come to depend on for my workout music. I have no idea where it is. Sigh. I can’t let it stop me from getting my workout. I hope I find it soon.

4.18 miles.

I only went walking one day because a lot of things happened. I have been eating a LOT better though and I’ve been getting exercise around the house so it’s not so bad. I ate a lot of soup this week. I had some great vegetable soup last night, which is a good thing because the cold bug has made it’s way to the kids and some of the adults that I know. I still have a lot of work to do, but I think I’m going to be taking a few naps this weekend. I’m feeling a bit achy and that’s never good.
